The alarming truth is that most cereals are essentially just a high sugar dessert pretending to be breakfast.
The average bowl of Cap’n Crunch packs 17 grams of sugar and only two grams of protein—meaning it might taste good, but it’s a recipe for a big blood sugar spike (and subsequent energy crash) and won’t keep you satisfied for long.
Not all cereal is the enemy, however…
Protein cereal offers more protein (duh) but with way less sugar.

Why, you ask?
The American Heart Association recommends that men should consume no more than 9 teaspoons (36 grams or 150 calories) of added sugar per day.
For women, the number is 6 teaspoons (25 grams or 100 calories) of added sugar per day.
Now, here’s the kicker: Sugar lurks in many cereals, from Cookie Crisp to Honey Nut Cheerio’s (say it ain’t so!).
Sugar can stir up inflammation, which has ties to a whole bunch of stuff, from erectile dysfunction to heart disease.
Added sugar, in particular, is a heavyweight contributor to obesity.

Despite this protein boost, Weetabix Protein can’t officially be labelled as ‘high protein’ according to the EU Commission’s standards. It falls just short of the benchmark, boasting 19g of protein per 100g (the EU Commission designates anything >20g per 100g as ‘high protein’).
That’s why, if you examine the box closely, you’ll notice it only states ‘Protein’ without the ‘High Protein Cereal’ label. A bit of clever marketing, did you catch that?
Now, let’s talk about sugar content. Weetabix Protein has 0.2g more sugar compared to the Original version (1.7g vs. 1.9g). This difference is evident when you glance at the ingredients list, where sugar is present in higher concentration.
However you look at it (or spoon it), a total of 1.9g per two biscuit serving isn’t too shabby for a cereal.
The fibre content in Weetabix Protein matches that of its Original counterpart (3.8g per two biscuits).
This similarity likely arises from the fact that the majority of the fibre content comes from the wholegrain wheat, which makes up 95% of the Original type.
In any case, both Weetabix products can be classified as ‘high fibre’ since they contain 10g of fibre per 100g (the benchmark for ‘high fibre’ claims is anything >6g per 100g).
