Horlicks for Weight Loss: Is Horlicks Good for Weight Loss?

In my 12 years as a personal trainer, I have been frequently asked about the impact of various foods on health and weight loss.

Today I am answering the question: Is Horlicks good for weight loss?

Horlicks, a drink crafted from malted milk, often promotes itself as beneficial for health. However, it contains a significant amount of calories and sugar, making it less ideal if you’re trying to lose weight.

A 25-gram serving of Horlicks has 182 calories and 19 grams of sugar. That’s more than half of the recommended daily sugar content for adults.

That being said, it’s important to note that Horlicks is not specifically designed for weight loss.

It does, however, offer some nutritional benefits that can support overall health.

Without further ado, let’s take a deeper look at the nutritional information and health benefits of Horlicks.

Horlicks Nutrition

Before we dive into the health benefits of Horlicks, let’s first examine the nutritional information.

A 25g serving of Horlicks contains:

  • Calories: 182kcal
  • Protein: 9.3g
  • Fat: 4.0g
  • Carbohydrates: 28.7g
  • Sugars: 19.2g

Horlicks, a brand of malted milk powder, traditionally crafts its signature creamy and malty flavour using malted wheat and barley.

People often mix it with hot milk to create a warm, comforting beverage, and typically consume it before bedtime.

Its rich, creamy flavour and association with providing energy and nutrients, especially for children and those seeking a warm, comforting drink, are well-known.

Horlicks Health Benefits

Horlicks Health Benefits

Here are three health benefits of drinking Horlicks:

1. Horlicks for Vitamins and Minerals

Horlicks boasts a total of 14 vitamins and minerals, including B1, B2, B5, B6, B12, C, D, E, folic acid, calcium, zinc, biotin, niacin, and iron. Put simply, it’s great for maintaining bone health and sustaining energy levels.

Although not designed for weight loss, these essential nutrients contribute to general well-being, helping to maintain a robust immune system and overall health.

2. Horlicks for Protein

Protein is necessary for tissue repair and growth. While I wouldn’t class Horlicks as a high-protein food, it does contain a modest 9 grams of protein per 25g serving.

Protein has a high thermal effect, meaning it requires more energy to digest, supporting weight loss. This is why I recommend high-protein foods to my clients so often.

It also promotes feelings of fullness, aiding in appetite control and weight management when consumed as part of a balanced diet and exercise routine.

3. Horlicks for Relaxation

Horlicks’ muscle-relaxing properties make it beneficial for consumption before bedtime.

While not directly aiding weight loss, relaxation and improved sleep quality promote healthier eating habits, contributing to overall well-being.

That being said, there’s no strict rule, and it can be consumed in the morning as well. The best time depends on your personal preference and how it fits into your daily routine.

In fact, Horlicks holds a significant place in Indian culture, often consumed in the mornings for its vitamin and mineral benefits.

Is Horlicks Good for Weight Loss? – Summary

Horlicks offers several health benefits, including essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium, B vitamins, and iron, which support bone health, energy metabolism, and red blood cell production.

It contains protein, which aids in tissue repair and growth, has a high thermal effect, requiring more energy for digestion, and promotes feelings of fullness, supporting appetite control.

Additionally, Horlicks contains Vitamin B6, which assists in breaking down proteins and reducing tiredness, while Vitamin D supports muscle function and the immune system.

While Horlicks is not specifically designed for weight loss, its nutritional profile and satiating properties can complement a balanced diet and exercise routine to support weight management goals.

As always, remember that reaching and maintaining your preferred weight involves consistently balancing the calories you consume with the ones you burn (calories in versus calories out).

With that in mind, Horlicks can be enjoyed as part of your weight loss routine, just make sure you’re still maintaining a consistent calorie deficit.
