RAF Fitness Test: What are the RAF Fitness Test Levels?

In my twelve year career as a personal trainer, I’ve been asked for help by many clients who wanted to join the armed forces.

Today I am answering the question what are the RAF fitness test levels?

Every individual joining the RAF must successfully pass a Pre-Joining Fitness Test (PJFT).

This assessment consists of running 1.5 miles (2.4km) on a treadmill within a specified time frame.

Additionally, you will be required to complete a minimum number of press-ups and sit-ups within one minute.

To assist you in improving your fitness safely, the RAF has designed a training plan that doesn’t require expensive equipment or a gym membership.

Fitness holds great significance in the Royal Air Force (RAF) due to the dynamic nature of its operations, whether in combat zones or on peaceful missions.

The RAF value individuals who possess unwavering determination and perseverance even in challenging circumstances.

They don’t expect superhuman strength or endurance right from the start; rather, they prioritise commitment and a strong work ethic.

What if I haven’t exercised before? Don’t worry. The RAF has developed a 12-week fitness plan suitable for individuals of all fitness levels. Start at the beginning, put in the effort, and you’ll soon be prepared to pass the fitness test.

How long should I prepare for the fitness test? While the RAF 12-week fitness plan is designed to prepare you adequately for the test, they strongly recommend striving to achieve your optimal fitness level beforehand. This will enable you to maximize the benefits of the training program.

What is the Multi-Stage Fitness Test? The Multi-Stage Fitness Test requires you to run between two markers in sync with progressively faster beeps. The goal is to keep up with the beeps for as long as possible.

Is the test different for officers? Like all roles within the RAF, officers are also required to pass the fitness test. It consists of the same 2.4km (1.5m) run on a treadmill and the minimum number of press-ups and sit-ups.

What happens if I fail the test? Failing the test does not signify the end of your journey. The RAF will provide you with options and opportunities to retake the fitness test at a later time.

What do I need on the day of the test? On the day of the test, make sure to be prepared with well-fitting exercise trainers, socks, shorts, and a T-shirt. The RAF provides you with more detailed information closer to the date of your fitness test.

Maintaining a Healthy Diet

Focusing on proper nutrition is equally as important as maintaining a good training regimen.

A well-balanced diet plays a significant role in ensuring your strength and overall health, enabling you to perform at your optimal level.

Dietary Guidelines

Here are some valuable tips to guide your dietary choices:

  1. Consume an ample amount of fruits and vegetables, aiming for at least five portions per day.
  2. Increase your water intake, aiming for at least 2500ml each day.
  3. Incorporate protein sources throughout the day, such as meat, fish, eggs, lentils, or protein powder.
  4. Exercise moderation when consuming alcohol.
  5. Include oily fish in your diet at least once a week for its omega fatty acid beneficial properties.
  6. Minimise sugar consumption by cutting back on fizzy drinks, cakes, and pastries.
  7. Check food labels and select options with lower salt content to manage your sodium intake.
  8. For weight loss, aim for a calorie deficit. For weight gain, aim for a calorie surplus.

By following these guidelines and making informed choices, you can maintain a nutritious diet that supports your overall well-being and performance.
